Which Girl Band Will Rule the Charts in 2011?

The year 2010 was the year of girl groups, with over 50 of the manufactured combos including Girls' Generation, Kara, 2NE1, and Wonder Girls competing for the top position. The trend is likely to continue and even intensify in the new year with many new groups such as Dalshabet and 5Dolls waiting in the wings.

The Chosun Ilbo selected 13 girl groups based on music portal Bugs' and KBS2 Music Bank's annual top charts at the end of last year, and analyzed their star power in five categories -- stage presence, fan loyalty, capability of each member, power of management, and performance in 2010 -- to predict what the year 2011 will be like for them. The result showed four strong powerhouses, five in the middle, and four at the weaker end.

The Strong Four -- Girls' Generation, 2NE1, Miss A, Kara

Girls' Generation are the dominant No. 1. They had a series of hit songs last year such as "Run Devil Run," "Oh," and "Hoot" and were widely recognized as the best girl group in Korea. They also scored significantly higher than others in the power of their management agency, fan loyalty and performance in 2010.

But 2NE1 are not far behind. Their stage presence counting singing, dancing and costume, and members' capacity were stronger than Girls' Generation's. And Miss A are also a strong contender. As they made their debut later, they were behind Girls' Generation in terms of fan loyalty but there is not much of a gap between them in terms of stage presence and members' ability. Kara had the best year in 2010 with explosive popularity in Japan and are likely to carry on their success in 2011.

Five in the Middle -- T-ara, After School, SISTAR, f(x), and Brown Eyed Girls

T-ara stood out last year with some of their members expanding their activities to acting as well. They are also expected to begin working in Japan this year.

In addition to sexy icon Uee, After School members Raina, Nana and Lizzy showed off their individual charms last year, and member Kahi's solo debut slated for February is expected to raise the profile of the entire group. f(x) and Brown Eyed Girls will likely have another great year as their members have shown their potential and talent on reality shows and in acting as well as music.

The Weak Four -- Wonder Girls, Rainbow, Secret, and 4minute

To everyone's surprise, Wonder Girls, one of the most popular groups, showed a visible downturn. Their long absence from Korea due to activities in the U.S. allowed them just two weeks to meet Korean fans, and that adversely affected fan loyalty. The retro concept of hit songs "So Hot" and "Nobody" has not changed much, and they have not been able to come up with novel ideas.

Rainbow and Secret are relatively new faces and therefore fall behind in fan loyalty. However, if each member seeks other ways to be recognized by fans, they have great potential to become a force to be reckoned with. 4minute scored relatively high in fan loyalty, but they did not have much success last year. Unless they come up with something of greater impact in the near future, their chances of surviving in the extremely competitive K-pop world look slim.

Jo Kwon was just kidding about dating Ga-in in real life

A few days ago, 2AM’s Jo Kwon elated the “We Got Married” fandom with his confession about dating Brown Eyed Girls Ga-In. As it turns out, he really was just goofing off - MBC’s “First Time in My Life“ decided to use a little snippet of his confession in their preview to draw in more viewers.

On the episode that aired on January 12th, the guests (including 2AM) started to discuss Jo Kwon and Ga-In’s relationship.

In a corner where they had to reveal each other’s sins/wrong-doings, Jinwoon pointed out, “Jo Kwon and Ga-In are a married couple onWe Got Married”, but are twin siblings on All My Love“.”

MC Jung Hyun Don said, “I heard that they are dating in real life,” to which Jo Kwon replied, “Yeah, we’re dating.”

The 2AM members played along with it and surprised the two MCs. Byun Ki Soo bursted out, “Writers, why don’t you get ready? Why don’t we have any kind of information? Are you really dating? Let’s get rid of this corner.” Jo Kwon then said, “Ay, we’re not dating.”

MC Gil said, “What is stopping you guys from dating? Does she have a flaw?” Jo Kwon answered, “We really have grown close together so we feel like siblings. There is no flaw. I have a lot to do with 2AM and my wife is very busy as well. I don’t know…”

Bae Yong Joon hospitalized for neck injury

Beloved Hallyu actor Bae Yong Joon has been hospitalized for a neck injury.

The injury is not a new one, as Bae Yong Joon was first admitted to the hospital back in 2007 for a disc problem in his neck. Filming for the drama, “The Legend“, caused the actor’s neck some trauma, and it looks like filming for “Dream High” has inflamed the injury once more.

Management agency Key East stated, “After stressing over the drama filming recently, his weakened neck became strained. The weather is cold as well, so it seems that while doing his duties as producer, his health worsened.”

Bae Yong Joon might have to undergo surgery for the issue after his 4-day hospital stay. He is currently taking medicine and doing physical rehabilitation.

His agency also added that although his absence will not significantly affect the “Dream High” production schedule, Bae is still trying his best to get better and return to the set.

'Yonsama'-JYP soap to reignite hallyu

Will a high school full of top K-pop singers and produced by hallyu (Korean wave) star Bae Yong-joon give a boost to the movement?

KBS’ new drama “Dream High” stars Taecyeon and Wooyoung from 2PM, Suzy from Miss A, Eun-jung from T-ara and singer IU — all first-rate young singers popular on the local entertainment scene. Kim Soo-hyun, who played the young Ko Soo in the 2009 drama “Will It Snow for Christmas?” is the only recognizable actor among the six main characters.

Holym, a television production joint-invested by Bae’s agency Keyeast and Park Jin-young’s JYP Entertainment, and CJ Media co-produced the drama and its publication rights in Japan have already been sold.

The highly-anticipated drama portrays the life of high school students of Kirin Art School, a school cultivating future artists and entertainers.

Bae, the creative producer of the drama, also guest-stars as Jeong Ha-myeong, the art school’s board chairman. As a creative producer, Bae provides the overall concept, goals and ideas for the drama.

“I was interested in educating the youth and thinking of establishing a school for entertainers-to-be. Park had the same idea and we focused on expressing the students’ dreams, hopes, agonies and conflicts through song and dance,” Bae said. “For the authenticity of the drama, I insisted that real singers and dancers should play the roles.”

He hinted at a possible expansion of the drama to other fields. “The boundary of content is falling apart and since the drama has an emphasis on singing and dancing, it might be reproduced in movie or musical form,” Bae said.

Park Jin-young, president of JYP Entertainment, directs the music and dance while acting the role of a part-time English teacher at the school.

He produced 10 original tracks, writing six new songs.

“I am trying to make the songs and dance in the drama trendy, portraying current pop culture,” he said.

The top producer is known for his Midas touch in producing g.o.d., Rain, Wonder Girls and 2PM, but in “Dream High,” he is a rookie actor who is nervous about his debut.

“Taecyeon and Jung Ji-hoon (Rain) are my acting teachers and it was hard to accept that I fell behind the people I taught at first,” Park said.

Bae and Park want to open a school like Kirin Art School in the real world later. “We are of the same age and talked about the school on private occasions. We have the same dream and I have found a good friend through this drama,” Park said.

K-pop stars to make acting debuts

Lee Eung-bok, director of the 16-episode drama, said, “I want to show how young students grow up and achieve great dreams through small efforts.”

The director said he was prejudiced against idol groups and the popular culture before meeting Bae and Park. “They have a dream in educating young entertainers and I will portray their ideas on the small screen,” Lee said.

Boy band 2PM’s Taecyeon, who successfully made his debut in the drama “Cinderella’s Sister” earlier this year, plays Jin Guk, a student good at dancing, but raised in his father’s shadow.

“Guk is a rebellious student and I wanted to play the role as the character is different from Jeong-woo in ‘Cinderella’s Sister,’” Taecyeon said. “Though I am not a veteran actor yet, I will do my best based on what I learned from previous experiences.”
Kim Soo-hyun plays Song Sam-dong, a boy from backwoods who discovers his talent at Kirin. Unlike other singers in the drama, Kim is training hard in singing and dancing. “Sam-dong is an unfinished character and I will improve with Sam-dong throughout the drama,” Kim said.
